The
glaciation study is an investigation of the till lain as ground moraine
by the retreating Irish Sea ice sheets of the Pleistocene. The investigation
took place at the cliff face of the Wirral Country Park Here the tidal
Dee estuary meets the glacial drift that overlies a sandstone base.
The cliff face provides a long section of exposed till (mainly boulder clay) to a depth of 60 metres. The exposure clearly reveals debris buried within the till fabric showing the direction of the glacial movement. The variation of material shape and density in the profile reveal periods of ice advance, ice retreat and also fluvio-glacial periods. |
